Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) heat exchangers
District heating
Alfa Laval has been
supplying heat exchangers to district-heating systems since the end of the 1950s. The
company's first turnkey thermal system (district heating module) was installed in 1967. |
 | Today the plate heat
exchanger and the brazed
heat exchanger are the most commonly used heat exchanger in district heating networks.
|
 | In substations on customers' sites, both the thermal system with either the
plate or the brazed heat exchanger provides safe and correctly controlled tempered water
to the domestic system. |
 | In large network stations, the plate heat exchanger serves to separate parts of the
network. The unit's thermal efficiency ensures low heat loss. |
|
Domestic water heating
Alfa Laval's heat exchangers
and water heaters have
become key components world-wide for domestic tap water or swimming pool heating
using a boiler or solar heating system. |
 | The plate heat exchanger
offers the benefits of: a constant availability of hot water, high heat transfer for
energy savings, compactness and easy installation, low scaling, quick and easy maintenance
with glue-free Clip-on EPDM gaskets |

Cooling systems
Heat exchangers are a vital component in both air conditioning and district cooling
systems. The extremely high heat recovery capabilities of the plate heat exchanger make it
possible to split circuits with minimal temperature losses. Plate heat exchangers protect
sensitive equipment from high pressures and can utilise high-efficiency fluids, limiting
the use of fluids such as glycol. |
 | The plate heat exchanger
serves as a pressure breaker by dividing the system into smaller sections when the static
presssure in the domestic system becomes too high as a result of the building height. The
temperature loss between circuits can be less than 1 °C (2 °F). |
 | In district cooling, the plate heat exchanger can serve as an interchanger
between the distribution net and the domestic system or in many duties in the
refrigeration process. Excellent heat transfer contributes to energy savings in this
environment- friendly and economical cooling system. |
 | The plate heat exchanger in chiller bypass systems allows the chiller to be shut down
during cold winter days. This free cooling alternative dramatically decreases operating
costs. |
 | A plate heat exchanger in a glycol condenser cooling system cuts costs by minimising the
size of the glycol circuit and thereby the amount of glycol needed. |
 | A plate heat exchanger can be installed between the chiller/heat pump and the ground
water in a ground water cooling system. |
 | Thermal storage systems allow users to reduce energy consumption during peak load hours.
Ice produced during low-rate night hours can be used in the cooling system during
high-rate daytime hours. The plate heat exchanger is an excellent heat exchanger to serve
between thermal storage and the domestic system. |

Dairy industry
Alfa Laval has produced plate heat exchangers for the dairy industry since 1931.
During the six decades since Alfa Laval produced its first milk pasteuriser, the
company has developed an extensive line of heat exchangers with the specific needs of the
dairy in mind
Brewing industry
Gentle product treatment and high thermal efficiency are important criteria for
maximising the taste of beer and in minimising production costs. Installed for preheating
sweet wort, the Alfa Laval plate heat exchanger shortens the processing time, which
improves the taste of the beer
 | The plate heat exchanger
for wort cooling provides maximum heat recovery and rapid cooling. The plate's outstanding
flow distribution minimises fouling. |
Fruit juice and drinks
Alfa Laval's hygienic plate heat exchangers are
used around the world for heating, pasteurisation, sterilisation, and cooling of a wide
range of beverages such as carbonated drinks, still drinks, fruit juice, nectars, coffee,
tea and ice tea.
|
 | Since heating affects the taste and colour of the beverage, it is important to keep heat
treatment to a minimum. The unique plate distribution area and long and narrow plate
configuration in Alfa Laval's plate
heat exchangers provide gentle and uniform heat treatment. Efficient heat transfer
reduces residence time in the heat exchanger to a minimum. The plate heat exchanger's
modular design makes it simple to restream the unit to accommodate changes in product
composition or flow rate. |

Prepared foods
Many food products such as desserts, fruit preparations, egg products, soups and
sauces, honey, vinegar, tomato products, condiments and confectionery can be processed in
Alfa Laval's heat exchangers.
Alfa Laval offers plate
heat exchangers that provide a high-quality end product. Typical applications are
cooling wine before sedimentation and filtration and, if needed, heat treatment before
packaging.
Production of sugar, whether from sugar beets or sugar cane, is an energy-intensive
process. Efficient heat exchangers help the sugar producer to maximise production and
product quality and minimise energy costs. For decades Alfa Laval has been supplying heat
exchangers to sugar mills and collaborating with sugar producers to develop heat
exchangers adapted to their specific needs
Pharmaceutical industries
Two of the major criteria in production in the pharmaceutical industries are
cleanliness and high product quality. Alfa Laval's heat exchangers contribute to fulfiling
these critieria.
